Minnesota-born Kyle Staver realized she was a painter after working as a sculptor for several years. She received her MFA from Yale University. Staver is interested in the human form and in placing her figures, often nude, in unselfconscious domestic narratives. The Gibson Girls is representative of her loose, colorful style. Writing in the New York Times, critic Roberta Smith noted "an exuberant freedom to her brushy, line-free forms."
