The dazzling zebra-like patterns of mowed wheat fields splay out against a roiling sky in this photograph by Don Kirby, who loves to travel the west in search of subjects, and has made numerous superb images of wheat fields throughout Washington, Oregon and Montana all seen with an unerring graphic clarity. Of this work he has said he uses a "predominately a defined graphic pattern with strong blacks strong whites, and lesser mid-tone emphasis. I’m really happy when I can get the land and the patterns of the atmosphere – the clouds – working in a complementary design in some sense. The majority of the images are done this way, hopefully with a lyrical, interesting graphic design."
