When painter Laura Ross-Paul traveled to England and Spain a few years ago, she took with her some small sheets of Yupo synthetic paper and a handful of Sharpies. As she visited museums and collections, she made quick sketches of objects that intrigued her, often combining works from different galleries or collections in a cultural mash-up of style and subject. Later, she added watercolor in her typical vivid palette to these drawings. Ross-Paul, who received her MFA from Portland State University (where she also taught for many years) has had numerous exhibitions and awards over the course of her career. As she has matured, her style has become looser and her colors more brilliant. Her paintings are based on the world around her: images of friends and family and of familiar landscapes form the core of her work.
