A native Californian, Jack Portland came to the Northwest to attend the Museum Art School (now the Pacific Northwest College of Art.) He is known for his richly colored and patterned paintings, whose motifs include elements from landscape and architecture, knit together in dense compositions. For many years, Portland has divided his time between Portland and Italy, where he learned the art of fresco painting. One of his frescoes can be seen at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Southeast Portland
