Loren Nelson's ability to create tonal ranges within dark areas as well as light ones is testament to his skills not only as a photographer but as a printer of his own photographs. Here the three planes of space-- foreground snowbank in luminous and sensuous undulations, followed by middle ground line of spiky weed stalks under an ominously bruised sky creates a vivid sense of place, animated by?its own contradictory textures and energies.
