I want to take a class that has a prerequisite that I have not taken. I feel like I am qualified to take it. What can I do?

Updated October 14, 2022

It depends on what the prerequisite is. PCC has standard prerequisites of reading, writing and mathematics for most general education courses. The standard prerequisites are:

  • Successful completion (grade “C” or better) of WR 115, or placement into WR 121, and
  • Successful completion (grade “C” or better) of RD 115, or equivalent test scores, and
  • Successful completion (grade “C” or better) of MTH 20 or placement into MTH 60

If you do not meet these prerequisite levels, you must complete the?courses required to reach the prerequisite levels before you will be permitted to register for general education courses.

If the course has a prerequisite other than the standards listed above, you may contact the instructor who teaches the course and ask about the option of an override, which will clear you for entry into the course. The override of a prerequisite can only be given by the instructor teaching the section of the course you are trying to get into. An override is only given at the instructor’s discretion.
