Sylvania Health Technology (West) Renovation Project
Renovations to the west side of Sylvania’s Health Technology (HT West) building will enhance the existing spaces to create a welcoming environment that celebrates health, inclusivity, and wellness.
Improvements include upgrades to common spaces that increase accessibility and foster collaboration, the addition of three new healthcare program classrooms, and four physical education rooms.
An inclusive all-user locker room will be added, along with optimization of the building’s mechanical, electrical, and roofing systems. The renovations will improve energy efficiency and accessibility onsite, and elevate the student experience on campus.
“This renovation will advance PCC’s mission to support student success and promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.” Gary Sutton, Planning & Capital Construction Manager
Changes to expect
During construction, some building services will be impacted. The following facilities are available to support this transition:
- The equipment issue area will relocate to the first-floor atrium of HT East.
- A single-use all-user shower is available on the second floor of HT East.
- Temporary changing rooms and lockers will be located on the first-floor atrium of HT East.
FAQs
Will the renovation of HT West feature one all-user locker room for everyone, or three separate locker rooms: men’s, women’s, and all-user?
HT West will feature one all-user locker area to allow a greater number of people to access the facility at any given time, distributing wait times equitably. The new all-user facility will include areas for private showering, changing, and toileting, in addition to an open area for locker storage. The building will also maintain two gender-specific enclosed rooms that include private showering/changing/toileting spaces with a locker storage area.
Can you share examples of other all-user locker rooms to provide a better sense of how these work?
Yes. Please see the links below for selected examples of completed all-user locker rooms:
- University of Washington Intramural Activities Building (IMA)
- Gardiner Middle School (Oregon, US)
- Rosemont Aquatic Center (Quebec, Canada)
- Portland Building (Oregon, US)
Will the fitness center be open during the renovations of HT West?
Yes, the fitness center will remain open and accessible. The hours can be found on the Sylvania fitness facility schedule page.
Will the gymnasium be open during construction?
The gymnasium will remain open during the fall, winter, and spring quarters. The gym will not be accessible during summer 2025 while the floors are refinished and mechanical systems are upgraded.
Will I be able to access the weight room during renovations?
The weight room will be open for class use during renovations of HT West.
Are showers available elsewhere on campus?
Yes, one all-user shower is available on the second floor of HT, and gender-specific showers are available in the Automotive Metals (AM) building.
