Course Description

Continues the work of Japanese 102. Introduces further Japanese language and culture. Emphasizes effective communicative skills in written and spoken Japanese. Includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, and Kanji characters. Prerequisites: JPN 102 or instructor permission. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand the general topic, questions and statements in short writings in Japanese.
  2. Write mostly simple sentences about familiar and everyday topics.
  3. Speak about familiar and everyday topics using simple sentences most of the time.
  4. Listen and identify the topic and some isolated elements from simple sentences in spoken Japanese.
  5. Explain the cultural perspectives related to some everyday Japanese cultural products and practices.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed by any combination of the following: 

  • Active participation in class

  • Individual presentations

  • Contextual written tasks to assess reading, writing, cultural, and  listening competencies

  • Quizzes over syllabaries and Kanji

  • Oral interviews with partner or instructor

  15. Give nuanced explanations in a culturally appropriate manner

  17. Express a requirement

  18. Discuss health and illness

  19. Discuss climate, weather and seasons

  20. Reads, (writes) and understands Kana syllabaries and approximately 140 kanji
