Course Description

Provides clinical education experience in an affiliated hospital radiology department under the supervision of a registered radiographer and radiologist. Includes equipment manipulation and operation, performance of radiological imaging procedures, application of radiation protection concepts, medicolegal and ethical standards, record keeping, and patient care skills. Prerequisites: RAD 100.

Addendum to Course Description

The student will learn the necessary skills that are required to function in the clinical area as a Radiologic Technologist, and will develop and exhibit proper professional work ethic. The course is designed as an Introductory Level I.
Radiography Clinic I (RAD 110) is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program. It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography. Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wished to transfer.
Prior to enrolling in this course the student must be accepted in the Radiography Program and have completed the required prerequisite courses.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Participate as a team member in routine radiographic exams in a clinical setting under direct supervision of a registered technologist.

  • Operate radiographic equipment, apply basic radiographic positioning techniques and radiation safety principles under direct supervision of a registered technologist.

Course Activities and Design

Level I - INTRODUCTORY: The student will be required to gather information and develop skills by observing and assisting the radiographer in radiologic examinations/procedures, patient care, radiation protection, equipment manipulation, and infection control.  Direct supervision by a radiographer will be provided by the clinical affiliate at all times. Students’ radiographs must be reviewed by either a radiographer, physician or radiologist prior to releasing the patient or submitting the radiographs. Safety is extremely important, and is taught throughout this program. Pertinent safety points are noted in this course.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Complete a minimum number of diagnostic examinations (clinical competencies) that correlate with RAD 101.
  2. Complete (2) clinical rotations with satisfactory evaluation scores.
  3. Complete the exercises in the clinical syllabus and the room objectives successfully.
  4. Adhere to the program attendance policy.
