Course Description

Covers theories and current practices in correctional treatment, crime prevention, contemporary criminal justice services and treatment methods, and professional career opportunities. Prerequisites: Placement into WR 121. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Student participating in this course will study the history of corrections and treatment modalities; while learning about the role of the corrections components within the criminal justice system. The 'goals of corrections' and the use of alternatives to incarceration will be included as the student applies these criteria to the concept of reintegrating the offender back into the community as a tax

paying / law abiding citizen. The student will achieve sensitivity for special correctional clients, including those with ADHD, mental health, geriatric, and other needs.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Students who have successfully completed this course will be able to:
1. Conduct basic assessment of needs for inmates including mental health and geriatric clients.
2. Work in a corrections environment with an understanding of basic concepts such as diversion, correctional goals, pre

sentence reports and treatment programs.
3. Assist offenders with building skills to successfully reintegrate into society.
