Course Description

Introduces multiple approaches to building a classroom community where students belong and thrive as learners. Analyzes strategies and theories for setting up a welcoming environment where procedures and systems are culturally appropriate and provide a space for all students to succeed. Prerequisites: (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Explore theories and research that supports the creation of a positive classroom culture.

  • Create an encouraging and engaging learning environment that highlights routines and systems conducive to learning for all students.

  • Select and implement culturally appropriate strategies to support diverse learners.

Aspirational Goals

  • The classroom community will foster a sense of belonging and connectedness.

  • Students deepen the learning on how to create a welcoming environment where students have a deep sense of belonging and thrive as learners.

Course Activities and Design

Students will present their learning in the form of discussions, group presentations and writing assignments on theories and research that highlight strategies to create a positive and welcoming classroom environment encouraging diverse learners to thrive (activities will vary- depending on modality of delivery).

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students' progress will be evaluated and criteria for assigning a course grade by the following tools:

  1. Create a classroom plan that is based on culturally appropriate theories and applications that foster a positive classroom culture

  2. Present a project demonstrating a positive and culturally appropriate behavior plan using theories and research taught in class 

  3. Participate in weekly discussions on the readings, theories and research

Communication: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to communicate effectively by determining the purpose of communication; analyzing audience and context to sue appropriate language and modality; and by responding to feedback to achieve clarity, coherence, and effectiveness.
Community and environmental responsibility: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to apply scientific, cultural, and political perspectives in understanding the natural and social world and in addressing the consequences of human activity both globally and locally, demonstrating an understanding of social change and social action.
Critical thinking and problem solving: Graduates of Portland Community College should be able to think critically and creatively to solve problems, understanding and using various methods of reasoning and evaluating information and it sources.

Self-reflection: Graduates of Portland Community College should be self-appraising in applying the knowledge and skills they have learned, examining and evaluating personal beliefs and comparing them with the beliefs of others.
