Course Description

Provides an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of entry-level skills used in the accounting workplace by drawing on concepts taught throughout the accounting degree and/or one-year certificate programs. Focuses on the elements of accounting principles, financial analysis, accounting software, professional communication, and ethical standards. Recommended: Students should enroll in this course near the end of their degree or certificate program. Prerequisites: BA 177, BA 211, and BA 228, and (WR 115 and RD 115) or IRW 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement.

In addition to the listed outcomes, this course will be used as a point of assessment for program outcomes.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles through the accurate recording of transactions and preparation of financial statements.
  2. Use computer accounting application software to set up a new client, establish an appropriate chart of accounts, and correctly record common transactions.
  3. Demonstrate professional communication and job search skills through the preparation of client letters, cover letters, and resumes.
  4. Evaluate the legal, ethical, and economic issues involving business scenarios and use critical thinking to professionally advise clients of best options.
  5. Complete a professional quality financial analysis using Excel and other visual tools that includes comparative financial statements, ratios, industry research, and a concluding analysis.

Course Activities and Design

  1. Completing an accounting skills mastery exam. 
  2. Preparing accurate financial statements in good form. 
  3. Completing payroll problem set.  
  4. Using computer accounting application software to set up a new clients, establish a chart of accounts and record common transactions.  
  5. Demonstrating professional communication skills through tasks including creating a resume, cover letter, past-due memo or letter to a client.  
  6. Completing an ethics case study. 
  7. Completing a financial analysis project using spreadsheet software.  

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be based on the evaluation of each element of the course activities listed previously.  These activities map back to the outcomes for the AAS - Accounting Degree and One Year Accounting Certificate.
