Course Description

Investigates patterns of alcohol and drug use by women and non-binary populations in our society. Explores models of treatment and recovery specific to the biology and gender identity of women. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Describe gender-specific treatment options, interventions and processes for women and non-binary populations.
  2. Articulate strategies for incorporating trauma and wellness-informed services including medication-assisted treatment into the counseling process specific to women and non-binary populations.
  3. Articulate strategies for working through countertransference when working with women and non-binary populations.
  4. Use cultural humility when working with women and non-binary populations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1. Apply information on women and addiction to tasks such as interviewing a staff member at

an alcohol and drug treatment center specializing in treatment services for women.

2. Document attendance at a minimum of two self-help meetings, including

one Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of community resources for women.

4. Integrate knowledge of women’s needs and barriers to addiction treatment through essay examinations.

8. Eating disorders; Overeaters Anonymous

10. Adults molested as children

11. Family violence/domestic violence

12. Nicotine addiction treatment
