Course Description

Covers the operation of refrigeration HVAC systems, emphasizing maintenance and controls. Lab includes troubleshooting systems along with evacuation and charging techniques. APR 133 and FMT 103 cannot both be taken for credit. Prerequisites: APR 132 or FMT 102 or TE 9243. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

As the third course in the refrigeration sequence, we will focus on applying the knowledge gained in the first two courses. We will concentrate on practical maintenance techniques as well as problem diagnosis and service procedures.

Intended Outcomes for the Course

  1.  Review the basic knowledge of refrigeration.
  2. Understand the practical uses of the Mollier Diagram for a serviceman.
  3.  Know how to determine a refrigeration units proper operation by finding and changing the super-heat setting.
  4.  Know how to charge a HVAC/R system by using one of the following methods: servicemen quick check, E.I. Dupont methods, charging cap tube systems, and demonstration of charging cylinder.
  5. Know how to recognize, troubleshoot and properly set thermostats and cold controls.
  6. Learn the types, functions, and troubleshooting of refrigeration controls.
  7. Learn the proper installation and service of motor safety controls.
  8. Understand the different troubleshooting techniques.

Course Activities and Design

Class activities will include lectures, discussion, demonstrations and laboratory activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Procedures will be discussed at the first class session and the instructor's grading policy will be referenced on the class syllabus. Assessment will be based on attendance, weekly quizzes, and the final examination.

A Pass - No/Pass grading option is not available for any APR (Apprenticeship) course.
