Course Description
Introduces the array of power transmission methods utilized in an industrial environment especially in manufacturing. Includes gearing and gear boxes, belt drives, magnetic couplings, direct couplings, chain drives, conveyor belts, vibration analysis, lubrication systems, predictive maintenance, planned preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance and troubleshooting. Emphasizes safety when working on or near industrial power transmission systems. Prerequisites: APR 168, and (WR 90 and RD 90) or IRW 90 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement or department permission. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Required Course for Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department Permission to take this course.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Use power transmission theory to service, install, maintain, analyze, and replace different types of power transmission systems found at an industrial worksite.
- Use the physical theories of horsepower transfer, speed ratios, torque, gear ratios, alignment, and tensioning in order to service, install, maintain, analyze and replace power transmission systems found at an industrial worksite, especially at a manufacturing worksite.
- Read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, and manufacturers' specifications to install, repair, and replace the power transmission systems found at an industrial worksite.
- *Identify mechanical and/or electrical industrial systems (*required statewide outcome).
- *Describe procedures for proper removal and disposal of hazardous materials (*required statewide outcome).
Course Activities and Design
Course design is primarily lecture and demonstration using Power Point presentations and presentations from industry specific online sources.
Course Activities include:
- Practice with assembly drawings, schematics, and manufactures' specifications
- Calculations for gear ratios, speed ratios, horsepower, and torque
- Practice with trouble shooting flow charts
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment will be accomplished using skills' checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentice's Journey Person.

- Speed calculations for chain and belt drives
- Magnetic couplings for drives
- Drive couplings including flanged, ribbed, sleeve, and universal solid couplings; rigid jaw, square faced jaw, flexible jaw, spider, modified flange, molded rubber and chain type couplings
- End drive conveyers, center drive conveyors
- Types of conveyor belts including fabric carcass, chevron, high chevron, and chain link
- Troubleshooting techniques and vibration analysis including laser analysis
- Lubrication strategies for gears and gearboxes
- Drive motor types, power supplies, and control strategies.
