Course Description
Includes Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Trade topics such as industry orientation, hazardous materials, general on-the-job questions, material handling, scaffolding, rigging, fire protection, hand and power tool use, fall protection, and electrical basics. Covers safety procedures that apply to each topic. Includes related terminology, task planning, methods and functions of construction, apprenticeship application process, program requirements, resume and interview skills. Recognized by the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry: Apprenticeship and Training Division's Council as an approved Pre-Apprenticeship program. Prerequisites: Placement in MTH 60 or higher or department permission. Corequisites: APR 200B and APR 200C. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Identify general safety and health techniques, and typical health and safety hazards on construction sites.
- Identify signs, signals, and barricades used on construction sites.
- Identify various types of heavy construction equipment and their uses.
- List tasks performed on construction projects.
- Identify basic elements of construction plans.
- Create portfolio for use in interviewing for apprenticeship programs or other trades training programs.
