Course Description

Covers the neurological, physiological, and behavioral impacts of substance use. Introduces common medications used in addiction treatment. Reviews common terminology used in addiction counseling documentation. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Articulate the effect of trauma and/or the chronic use of drugs has on the brain including neurochemistry and specific neurological and behavioral impairment.
  2. Describe symptoms of addiction.
  3. Describe medications commonly used to treat addiction.
  4. Identify physiological effects of substance use.
  5. Describe which symptoms of addiction meet criteria for treatment.
  6. Identify types of documentation required for treatment.
  7. Use common addiction medicine terminology.
  8. Describe professional organizations for addiction-related professionals and the resources they provide.
