Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
This course is designed for students with no previous industry experience. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to perform, repairs on import and domestic cars and light trucks. This course will prepare students for job entry level and they will practice learned skills on vehicles until they can diagnosis and repair automatic transmission and transaxle with limited supervision. This is the skill level necessary for employment at an apprentice level.
The broader purpose of this course is to provide students", at the beginning of their first year in the automotive program, with authentic experience in basic industry skills and concepts, to ensure their success in later courses and on-the-job. These skills include tool use, fastener tightening, and ASE (automotive service excellence) style test taking. Concepts and professionalism and responsible customer service.
The course material will be presented in a lecture/laboratory format and include videos", handouts and hands-on lab experience in the shop on cars donated by General Motors, Nissan, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and Honda. Students are required to read assigned materials, take notes and be responsible for the information in the textbooks, lab manuals and the Mitchell ON-DEMAND publications on computer CD disc location in each of the work areas through out the automotive labs.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Performs automatic transmission/transaxle repairs and overhaul with limited supervision.
- Formulates strategies and processes to solve transmission/transaxle repair problems.
- Performs automatic transmission/transaxle repairs to the highest professional and ethical standards.
- Demonstrates preparation for automatic transmission/transaxle diagnosis by explaining overdrive power-flow.

- Performing a complete Automatic transmission/transaxle inspection and service.
- Automatic Transmission/Transaxle diagnosis and repair.

- Automatic Transmission/Transaxle planetary gear train diagnosis and repair.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Critical to the effective diagnosis and repair of any automotive system is an understanding of how and why certain components work. On today’s automobile", this is often more useful for the technician than the ability to perform a particular adjustment or replacement. A technician must also have the ability to determine which repairs are in their own best interest. To develop this background understanding of automotive Automatic transmission/transaxle systems, students will explore the following concepts:

- Hazards of chemicals used in cleaning and lubrication of the Automatic transmission/transaxle assembly.

Skills:
- In Automotive transmission/transaxle coarse, students will build an inventory of the following repair skill to prepare for a career as a transmission/transaxle apprentice technician.
- Identify and interpret transmission concern: assure proper engine operation; determine necessary action.
- Diagnose unusual fluid usage, level and condition concerns; determine necessary action.
- Perform pressure tests; determine necessary action.
- Perform lock-up converter system tests; determine necessary action.
- Diagnose electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum control system concerns; determine necessary action.
- Diagnose noise and vibration concerns; determine necessary action.
- Inspect, adjust or replace throttle (TV) linkage or cables, check gear select indicator (as applicable).
- Service transmission; perform visual inspection; replace fluids and filters.
- Inspect, adjust or replace vacuum modulator; inspect and repair or replace lines and hoses.
- Inspect, repair and replace governor assembly.
- Inspect and replace external seals and gaskets.
- Inspect extension housing, bushing and seals; perform necessary action.
- Inspect, leak test, flush and replace cooler lines and fittings.
- Inspect and replace speedometer drive gear, driven gear, vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and retainers.
- Inspect and test, adjust, repair or replace transmission related electrical and electronic components (includes computers, solenoids, sensors, relays, switches and harnesses).
- Inspect, replace and align power train mounts.
- Remove and reinstall transmission torque converter (rear-wheel drive).
- Remove and reinstall transaxle and torque converter assembly.
- Disassemble, clean and inspect transmission/transaxle.
- Inspect, measure, clean and replace valve body (includes surfaces and bores, springs, valves, sleeves, retainers, brackets, check-balls, screens, spacers and gaskets) and torque valve body bolts.
- Inspect servo bore, piston, seals, pin, spring and retainers; determine necessary action.
- Inspect accumulator bore, piston, seals, spring and retainer; determine necessary action.
- Assemble transmission/transaxle.
- Inspect convert flexplate, attaching parts, pilot, pump drive and seal areas.
- Measure torque converter endplay and check for interference; check stator clutch.
- Inspect, measure and replace oil pump assembly and components.
- Check torque convert and transmission cooling system for contamination.
- Measure endplay or preload; determine necessary action.
- Inspect, measure and replace trust washer and bearing.
- Inspect oil delivery seal rings, ring grooves and sealing surface areas.
- Inspect bushing; replace as needed.
- Inspect and measure planetary rear assembly (includes sun, ring gear, trust washers, planetary gears and carrier assembly); replace as needed.
- Inspect case bores, passages, bushings, vents and mating surfaces; determine necessary action.
- Inspect transaxle drive, link chains, sprockets, gears, bearing and bushings; perform necessary action.
- Inspect, measure, repair, adjust or replace transaxle final drive components; determine necessary action.
- Inspect clutch drum, piston, check-balls, springs, retainers, seals and friction and pressure plates; replace as needed.
- Measure clutch pack clearance; adjust as needed.
- Air test operation of clutch and servo assemblies.
- Inspect roller and sprag clutch, races, rollers, sprags, springs, cages and retainers; replace as needed.
- Inspect bands and drums; adjust or replace as needed.
