Course Description

Introduces customer work on approved automobiles including diagnosis of electrical problems, reading of schematics, use of test equipment, satisfactory completion of wire connections, testing, repair, and/or replacement of electrical units. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students will apply skills acquired from Electrical Systems I & II classes to perform diagnosis of problems on school owned and customers vehicles. Students will be required to successfully diagnose problems pertaining to the following systems: starting, charging, lighting, power accessories, windshield wipers, instrument gauges, horns and defoggers. Theory of multi-plexing will be discussed. Students will practice safe airbag disabling procedures. Classroom review of individual electrical circuits and diagnostic procedures will take place during lecture.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1.Perform a complete electrical system inspection.
2.Disable an airbag using correct safety procedures
3.Test and diagnose a simple body control system
4.Test, diagnose and document needed repairs on starting and charging systems
5.Test, diagnose and document needed repairs on electrical accessory systems
6.Prepare accurate written documentation of all classroom projects
7.Achieve a minimum of 70% on written final

Concepts:
Students will study the following concepts:

•Perform volt drop tests on various electrical circuits •Safely disable an airbag system •Use analog and digital test equipment •Use all forms of technical service information •Practice safe tool and equipment usage •Read and interpret wiring schematics •Evaluate, test and diagnose electrical circuit problems •Write concise reports detailing diagnosis of electrical circuit problems •Provide accurate verbal description of testing and diagnostic procedures

Activities:

Students check vehicle test results and compare results with manufactures/industry specifications.
Students compute/document labor hours, parts prices, and labor prices on repair order for each vehicle worked on in the lab.

Activities:

Students document inspection, repairs, service recommendations, and work performed daily on an electronic repair order including investigating
customer complaints, researching systems via Alldata and Mitchell and TSB’s
Students work teams communicate with staff to check out tools, school cars, and have repair orders written for lab projects. Students write parts requests and verbally explain what parts/repairs/service is needed to customer service personnel, and instructor.

Activities:

Students work in teams to complete assigned lab projects.
Students work with lab partners, staff members, and their instructor to bring customer/school cars in /out of the shop for class lab projects.
