Course Description

Introduces preventive and corrective maintenance of bearings and seals found in industrial equipment and at industrial facilities. Includes sleeve bearings, roller bearings, and sealing and lubrication practices for bearings and bearing races. Includes diagnosis, inspection, and repair. Emphasizes the use of equipment and lubricant manufacturers' specifications, equipment history, and equipment maintenance logs. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Required course for Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department Permission to take this course.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance for industrial equipment and facilities using manufacturers' specifications and equipment history applied to the installation and replacement of bearings and seals.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance for industrial equipment and facilities using lubricant manufacturers' specifications and equipment history applied to the lubrication of moving parts. Meet industry standards for correct lubrication.
  • Use tracking software to log preventive and corrective maintenance of industrial equipment and facilities and analyze tracking logs to plan future maintenance.
  • *Define lubrication processes with trade-specific industrial materials and equipment (*required statewide outcome).
  • *Apply OSHA practices in relationship to the specific trade (*required statewide outcome).

Course Activities and Design

Course design is mostly lecture coupled with demonstration of a variety of the bearings, seals, and lubricants used at today's Industrial work sites for both equipment and the facility. Guest experts include manufactures' representatives from both equipment companies and lubricant companies.

Activities include:

  • Introduction to several tracking software programs for logging preventative maintenance
  • Introduction to the host of different bearings and seals available to the Millwright/ Industrial Technician using both Power Point  and online presentations.
  • Lubricant analysis

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be accomplished  using skills' checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentices' Journey Person.
