Course Description

Introduces the art of the moving image through animation, filmmaking, and video game design as a means of creating time-based art. Includes experimentation with analog materials such as painting, drawing, sculpture, sound and installation alongside digital tools. Explores the complexities surrounding video art by examining each element individually. Considers the historical evolution of film, A.I., and video games as a way of understanding video art. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify important historical events and technical developments within the world of video art.
  2. Assess and analyze various art-making techniques and practices present in film-making, machine learning software and game design.
  3. Use contemporary editing software skills to emulate analog practices such as drawing, painting, sculpture and installation.
  4. Identify visual and sonic techniques grounded in New Media that act as a means of contemplation, resistance, and expression.

To cultivate an appreciation for the practice of Video Art alongside empowering students to take control of their agency in the ever evolving world of new technology.
