Course Description

Investigates tools and techniques to explore several styles of hand lettering as a vehicle for artistic expression through the use of hand written text. 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网s a familiarity with creating and using a variety of scripts. Establishes a facility and understanding of the components of hand written scripts with a focus on monoline techniques. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

College level reading comprehension is necessary. Hand Lettering fulfills the requirement for art electives in the Graphic Design CTE program. Course may include demonstrations, slides, lectures and videos.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Recognize the basic components of successful hand lettering.
  2. Critically evaluate the art of hand written lettering.
  3. Apply knowledge of hand lettering to the study of calligraphy, typography and graphic design.
  4. Create works of hand lettering that demonstrate an introductory level of skill in basic monoline lettering styles, layout and design, along with other tools and techniques.

Course Activities and Design

  • Classes will include lecture, demonstrations, videos, class projects, homework and a final project.
  • Class work and demonstrations will explore multiple lettering styles and writing tools including but not limited to basic monoline lettering styles and layout techniques.
  • Final projects will incorporate a variety of media, substrate and monoline lettering styles.
  • Class work and final project will provide direct somatic experience of typography to broaden students' understanding of lettering beyond computer technology.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Hand lettering projects will be assessed to determine student’s level of mastery of concepts, techniques and skills taught in the course.
  • Participation in class discussions will also be used to assess outcome attainment.
