Course Description

Introduces sign language interpreting as a profession. Includes the roles and functions of interpreters; employment options; and an analysis of the demands and rewards of the career path. Covers fundamental pre-interpreting skills and reviews linguistic and grammatical principles and conventions; explores strategies for developing ASL and English vocabulary and skills for effective communication.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Use knowledge of duties, responsibilities, roles and functions of interpreters, the job market and careeroptions to make an informed decision about a career in the field of American Sign Language Apply grammatical and linguistic conventions to text analysis and effective communicationDescribe to others the importance of memory, visualization, paraphrasing, summarizing, and abstraction in the interpreting processPrepare source texts for translation using principles of text analysis

Course Activities and Design

Activities include readings, lectures, discussions, small group problem-solving tasks, analysis of jobdescriptions, text analysis, grammatical and linguistic exercises, guest speakers, videos, andstudent presentations.

Assessment strategies include written quizzes, exams, and assignments, including a researchpaper.
