Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
1. Critically analyze the culture of different societies in a specific ethnographic area.
2. Reflect on how culture shapes personal and social values at the local and global level.
3. Use an understanding of cross-cultural research and methods to examine the features of different cultures
Social Inquiry and Analysis
Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment strategies may include any of the following:
- exams (take home or in class)
- quizzes
- student presentations
- term papers
- short papers or reports
- experiential exercises
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Themes:
* culture as a concept
* cultures in a specific ethnographic area
* cross-cultural research
Issues:
* comparison of cultural similarities and differences in a specific ethnographic area
* effect of enculturation and acculturation on different cultures
Concepts:
* cross-cultural comparison
* identication of different cultural features such as ideology, social organization or technology and economics
Skills:
* read and write at the college level
* discuss various cultures
* evaluate cross- cultural research
