Course Description

Receive training in instrument flight operations including basic attitude instrument skills, radio navigation, departure and approach procedures and instrument cross-country planning and flying. Provides required flight and ground instruction in preparation for the FAA Instrument Rating – Airplane knowledge and practical tests. Flight training fees apply and cover a specific amount of training; additional fees may be required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is part of a program designed to meet the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration for the Instrument-Airplane Rating.  Lecture/discussion/demonstration sessions and lab practice supported by written and multi-media materials will present to the student the knowledge and skills necessary to perform oral and practical tests, which are required to obtain an Instrument-Airplane Rating.  This course will be taught following or concurrently with AVS 130.  As necessary knowledge areas that are taught in AVS 130 will be reviewed to meet the completion requirements.  A minimum of 35 hours of flight training lab time (including flight training device) is required for the completion of the course along with the minimum performance standards listed below.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1. Apply for and take the FAA Instrument Rating practical test.
2. Obtain an Instrument Rating.
3. Conduct flights typical for a Private Pilot under instrument flight rules while maintaining situational awareness and exercising safe judgment in all flight related decisions.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate and record student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.  Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing.  Evaluation levels will meet or exceed those defined
by FAA-S-8081-4C (or subsequent edition) Instrument Rating Practical Test Standards, and required under 14CFR 141, FAA Approved Training Course.

Course Content and Outcome Guides are prepared by the Aviation Science Subject Area Curriculum Committee, are approved by College management, and are based on 14 CFR 141 Appendix C (4) (d) which requires:

  1. Preflight preparation;
  2. Preflight procedures;
  3. Air traffic control clearances and procedures;
  4. Flight by reference to instruments;
  5. Navigation systems;
  6. Instrument approach procedures;
  7. Emergency operations; and
  8. Post flight procedures.
