Course Description

Begins commercial pilot training activities and includes cross-country flight operations and a review of previous items learned during private and instrument pilot training. Explores how to plan and execute a cross-country flight as a commercial pilot. Provides ground training required to take the FAA Commercial Airplane knowledge test. Flight training fees apply and cover a specific amount of training; additional funds may be required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed to complete the first stage of the commercial pilot flight training and to begin meeting the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration for a commercial airplane single-engine land certificate.  Lecture/discussion/demonstration sessions and lab practice supported by written and multi-media materials will present to the student the knowledge and skills necessary to perform oral and practical tests which are required to obtain a commercial certificate.  This course will be taught following or concurrently with AVS 140.  Knowledge areas that are taught in AVS 140 will be reviewed and revised if necessary to meet the completion requirements. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:

1. Plan and execute cross-country flights to the standards of a commercial pilot.
2. Take responsibility as Pilot In Command to approach cross-country flights with confidence and authority.
3. Exercise sound judgment and make safe decisions while maintaining contingency plans and a high level of situational awareness during cross-country flights..

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate and record student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.  Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing.  Evaluation levels will meet or exceed those defined by FAA-S-8081-12A (or subsequent edition) Commercial Pilot Practical Test Standards, and required under 14 CFR 141, FAA Approved Training Course.

Course Content and Outcome Guides are prepared by the Aviation Science Subject Area Committee, are approved by College management, and are based on portions of 14 CFR 141 Appendix D (4) (d) (1), which requires:

  1. Preflight preparation;
  2. Preflight procedures;
  3. Airport and seaplane base operations;
  4. Takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds;
  5. Navigation;
  6. Emergency operations;, and
  7. Post flight procedures.
