Course Description

Covers fundamentals of teaching and learning theory, evaluation techniques, and related skills necessary for a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate. Emphasizes instruction techniques and presents sufficient knowledge to be prepared for the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing and CFI Airplane or Helicopter knowledge tests. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

The Flight Instructor ground school course is designed to teach the aeronautical knowledge areas necessary to take the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing and CFI - Airplane knowledge tests. Lectures, discussions, videos, handouts, and written tests will provide the student with the information needed to accomplish this. Class participants will be expected to invest time outside of class to master the course content. Material missed by students during an allowed absence will be made available to them as selected by the instructor and the applicable FAR requirements.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Qualify to take the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing knowledge test.
  • Qualify to take the FAA CFI Airplane or Helicopter knowledge test.
  • Plan and teach a lesson covering private and commercial pilot knowledge areas.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will explain the methods used to evaluate and record student progress, and the criteria for assigning a course grade. Evaluation methods may include one or more of the following: Tests and quizzes, attendance, presentations, class assignments, and class projects.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Aeronautical knowledge training will be provided in the following areas for this course as outlined in FAR 61.185 (a) and FAR 141 appendix F (3):
1. The fundamentals of instructing including:

  1. The learning process;
  2. Elements of effective teaching;
  3. Student evaluation and testing;
  4. Course development;
  5. Lesson planning; and
  6. Classroom training techniques.

2. The aeronautical knowledge areas in which training is required for recreational, private and commercial certificates applicable to airplane single-engine land or helicopter, as applicable.
