Course Description

Discusses fundamental concepts, principles, and rules of law that apply to business transactions. Includes the function and operation of the courts, alternative dispute resolution, torts, contract law, product liability, intellectual property, and recent developments in business law, such as cybercrime, social media and privacy. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Business Law is designed to expose the student to the US Legal System and its effect on business activities. The course provides the student information about the difference between trial courts and appellate courts, public law and private law, civil law and criminal law. Other topics will include: legal procedure, tort law, computer and intellectual law, business crimes, contract law, and sales of goods. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the Legal Environment of Business.

  2. Apply basic legal knowledge to business transactions and legal focused business concepts and situations.

  3. Communicate effectively using standard business and legal terminology.

  4. Distinguish the role of federal and state law in relation to business.  

  5. Demonstrate recognition of intellectual and other property rights.

  6. Demonstrate knowledge of basic court procedures and other business dispute resolution means.
