Course Description

Provides both theory and practical concepts to prepare project plans. Introduces theoretical concepts, industry tested instruction, and practical applications. Covers both "hard" and "soft" people skills, and different project management related methodologies. Provides an opportunity to apply skills in a culminating group project. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course provides students with an overview of theoretical and applied skills.  Project management is an academic discipline with language of its own.  Organizations are placing more focus on project-based planning and execution.   Furthermore, project managers are requested to interface with internal and external clients to manage change and deliver project outcomes.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Link projects with an organization’s strategic plans, documenting the business or non-profit's needs and business case.
  2. Apply project management templates to map out a business case, project charter and project plan components.
  3. Model project management principles to prepare project plans through the key phases of initiating, planning executing, monitoring, controlling and closing a project.
  4. Apply the stages of the project management process and introduce PMI® (Project Management Institute), various certifications, and PMBOK® (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and other global based certifications.
  5. Apply numerous project methodologies including Waterfall, Agile, Critical Path, and other methodologies including project selection criteria and equitable team building skills.
     

Outcome Assessment Strategies

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade. The methods may include one or more of the following tools: examinations, quizzes, homework assignments, project plan submission.

Instructors may use a variety of methods in teaching the course depending on their background:

1.Apply group skill-building activities such as case studies, or exercises toward critical analysis of course concepts.

2.Prepare written assignments and presentation formats designed to integrate course material into personal experience or experience of others.

3. Complete exams consisted of essay and/or objective questions or complete individual project plans and/team project or paper which integrates course concepts, issues, and themes.

4.Guest “subject management expert” lecturers and speakers.

5. Get hands-on experience with practice for key project management tools to streamline project tasks and enhance productivity.

6.Discuss pros and cons and common mistakes of managing projects.

7. Introduce various project management software tools.

8.  Incoporate discussions of case study questions from a textbook or situations provided by the instructor.

9.Model project management concepts  with  supporting videos.

10. Encourage student attendance to local PMI® meetings and network with seasoned professionals.

A. Define the overall scope of the project, documenting project goals, deliverables, constraints, performance criteria, and resource requirements as defined by project stakeholders' needs.

B. Identify potential risk events and assess outcomes of risk management.

C. Determine quality requirements and implement a quality assessment plan.

D. Interact with project team members from various departmental paradigms including face-to face and remote team members respecting differences to work in a collaborative environment.

E. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication strategies including participating and leading project team meetings.

F. Communicate with project sponsorship and the project management office (PMO).

G. Market and propose projects internally and externally.

H. Resume building, interviewing, and internal positioning for a project management role.

I. Review project career paths, including various certifications (PMP®, CAPM®, and others).

J. Review various Project Management tools.
