Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Learners will both individually and collaboratively produce a mathematical reference guide as a marketing tool for future employment and as a field guide for their use
Intended Outcomes for the course
To carry out building construction tasks (light framing, concrete, finish carpentry and cabinetmaking) requiring mathematical calculations.
To use and upgrade a reference manual containing formulas and procedures used to solve math related building construction problems.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
1. Work collaboratively to produce mathematical solutions to building construction problems and situations presented in classroom “Discovery Projects”. Collect data, sketch, develop strategies, find patterns and test the validity of solutions. Solution path and answer(s) will be written clearly and concisely.
2. Create a mathematical formula and procedural “Reference Guide”, which can be use on the construction job site to solve building construction problems, requiring mathematics.
3. Successfully complete two “Mastery Projects” in which real world construction scenarios, requiring mathematical solutions, must be successfully analyzed and solved by the individual learner. Solution paths must be clearly documented.

Process Skills
1. Use a hand held calculator to solve mathematical problems.
2. Sketch to reveal patterns and meanings through visualization.
3. Collect and analyze data to determine knowns and unknowns.
4. Use formulas to solve for unknowns.
5. Convert numbers from one unit type to another. i.e. feet to feet and inches and visa versa
6. Use the tape measure to physically layout and measure.
7. Document mathematical solution neatly and concisely.
8. Work collaboratively with team member(s).
