Course Description

Covers basic floor framing systems and principles used in residential construction. Includes floor systems installed on foundations using current building construction methods. Includes floor leveling, sill plate installation, floor framing material identification, joist and beam lay-out, quantity take offs, estimating and related codes. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:

  • Lay out floor joist and beams
  • Assemble floor system components
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with other students

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Students will individually layout a joist floor system and post and beam system with floor openings.
  2. Students will individually identify conventional floor framing parts and terminology.
  3. Students will collaboratively construct various floor systems.
  4. Students will individually complete a floor material take-off from a plan.
