Course Description

Introductory class in construction estimating concentrating on basic commercial estimating techniques. Using plans for a light commercial building, students will learn: how to organize and prepare estimates, quantity take-off and pricing, and the fundamentals of bid assembly.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Perform thorough and accurate material takeoffs on commercial construction projects
  • Perform thorough and accurate labor estimates on commercial construction projects
  • Price materials and labor on commercial construction projects

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Individually demonstrate thorough and accurate material and labor takeoffs by completing two "Mastery Projects"
  • Work collaboratively to calculate labor, material quantities, and unit costs
  • Individually research and price alternate materials
  • Individually complete an accurate job estimation sheet
