Course Description

Introduces product lines and manufacturing operations through visual media or facility tours. Covers fundamentals of technical report writing, memos, and resume development with instruction relating to sentence structure, paragraph and essay development, and written expression. Includes internet research of technical products related to drafting and design, and American National Standards Institute drafting practices and terminology. Introduces file systems and learning management systems using Windows and PCC specific protocols. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:

  1. Create an industry-specific resume.
  2. Create professional and industry-appropriate technical reports using a variety of sentence structures, paragraphs, and short forms that emphasize correct grammar, punctuation, coherence, and clarity.

  4. Utilize basic word processing in writing.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism appropriate for the workplace.
  6. Recognize and utilize pre-writing steps for composing good technical reports, memos and resumes.  

Course Activities and Design

A number of class sessions will involve guest speaker(s) and/or tours of facilities. Students will have the opportunity to observe technical drawings, technical communications, product samples and sales materials. Industry representatives will provide orientation sessions and ample opportunity for student questions.

The remaining class sessions will be devoted to the development of technical reports and memos, resume writing with proper sentence structure, punctuation, grammar and clarity.  Additional activities related to internet research, and participation in discussions with industry representatives.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have satisfactorily accomplished the goals and objectives listed in this Course Content Guide, including;

  1. Participation in the various manufacturing tours as scheduled during the course.

  2. Generate technical reports and memos as required in industry through good writing practices.

  3. Complete a personal resume suitable for submission to a potential employer.

  4. Engage in internet activities that explore and define the world of drafting and design.

Design and Drafting Outcome Strategies

Evaluation procedures and grading criteria will be discussed during the first class meeting. Individual and classroom discussion, attendance and participation may be used to assess outcomes.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

1.0 Local representatives from industry

  1. Students will experience industry representatives on campus.

    1. The students will observe industry standard drawings.

    2. The students will observe product line parts and the drawings needed to describe these parts.

    3. The students will have the opportunity to ask questions during, and after, the presentation.

2.0 Students will participate in manufacturing facility tours

  1. Students will observe the actual drafting job environment.

    1. Students will experience the chronological sequence from design, drafting (with CAD), through manufacturing.

    2. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the tour(s).

3.0 Technical documents, Resumes, Writing and Internet Research

  1. Students will produce technical documents including reports and office memos.

  2. Students will create a personal resume suitable for submission to a potential employer.

  3. Students will engage in internet activities that explore the world of drafting and design.
