Course Description

Introduces SolidWorks software as a 3D design tool. Covers creation, retrieval and modification of 3D models and 2D drawings using basic SolidWorks commands. Focuses on methods for creating parametric parts, parametric assemblies and dimensioned technical drawings. Audit Available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Create three-dimensional solid models using a variety of basic modeling commands.
  2. Draw and define two-dimensional geometric elements using sketch tools, dimensions, and relations.
  3. Position and constrain assembly components within the assembly environment.
  4. Create 2D drawings from parts and assemblies.
  5. Modify parts, assemblies, and drawings using edit commands.
  6. Identify SolidWorks file types, and share data in both native and neutral formats.
  7. Apply industry standards in the preparation of technical mechanical drawings.

Course Activities and Design

Class lectures, demonstrations, laboratory projects and individualized instruction support the student’s development. By building parts and assemblies in the context of completing a design task, the student learns and masters SolidWorks commands. Open laboratory time will be made available, and may be necessary to complete the given tasks. Examples of course activities include:

  • Creation of 3D solid models and 2D drawings from technical data such as sketches and mechanical drawings.

  • Completion of design projects that include parts, assemblies and drawings..

  • 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网ment of 2D mechanical drawings that meet design input requirements and industry standards.

  • Identification of SolidWorks commands, workflows and terminology.

  • Participation and contribution to class discussions and activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The following must be assessed:

  • Build an accurate 3D solid model from dimensioned orthographic or isometric views of an object.

  • Fully define a sketch using both dimensions and relations.

  • Assemble multiple 3D solid parts into a SolidWorks assembly. Use assembly mates to fully constrain the assembly.

  • Create a multi-view orthographic mechanical drawing with dimensions on a standard drawing format.

Assessment shall include evaluation of the student’s ability to arrive at correct solutions using problem solving techniques and industry standard practices.

Assessment measures shall be selected from the any of the following:

  • Proctored exams

  • Take-home exams

  • Graded homework

  • Quizzes

  • Projects

  • In-class activities

  • Portfolios
