Course Description

Covers practical application of industry standard product development process(es) and associated tools.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Design, document and oversee prototyping of a product that meets established requirements.

  2. Apply industry standard tools and methodologies for completing each phase of a product development project.

  3. Work effectively as a product development team member working collaboratively to communicate technical information in a project environment.

  4. Use human relations techniques to resolve team conflicts.

  5. Demonstrate the ability to provide timely status updates when requested by management (or clients) by identifying the correct phase of a design project and associated deliverables.

Course Activities and Design

Complete activities, assignments, and exams, which show an understanding of the product development process.

  • Complete assignments, projects, test or quiz problems, and class activities requiring student teams to work together for designing and building a product that meets predetermined requirements.

  • Use 3D CAD to design, document and analyze a new product.

  • Understand and apply the typical product development phases used in industry:  Concept Phase, Requirements Phase, Design Phase, Prototype Phase, Validation Phase and Production Phase.

  • For each phase of the project: demonstrate knowledge of associated tools and deliverables related to the applicable phase.

  • Participate in, and contribute to, class discussions and activities.

  • Take all scheduled examinations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The following must be assessed:

  • 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网 a design using CAD that meets requirements.

  • Identify the attributes of an effective product development team.

  • Given various team human relation scenarios, determine the best course of action to improve team dynamics and effectiveness.

  • Demonstrate the status of where a product development process phase exists.

  • Complete a DFMEA (Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)

  • Complete a tolerance stackup analysis of the project using industry standard manufacturing process tolerances.

  • Complete a requirements document

  • Complete a test plan document

  • Effectiveness of a team meeting

At least two proctored, closed-book, one page/one sided formula notes, examinations (one of which is the comprehensive final) must be given. These exams must consist primarily of free response questions although a limited number of multiple choice and/or ll in the blank questions may be used where appropriate.
