Course Description

Introduces Microsoft Publisher to design and create effective publications that combine text graphics, illustrations, and/or photographs such as announcements, fliers, advertisements, and reports. Covers the processes to create, import, and manipulate text, graphics, and/or templates through program tools and features. Recommended: Placement into RD 115 and WR 115; prior knowledge and use of Windows technology. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
1. Use Microsoft Publisher to create personal and/or business publications following current professional and/or industry standards.
2. Use critical thinking skills to independently design and create publications.

A letter grade will be issued for this course. Assessment tasks may include:

  1. Desktop publishing terminology and basic design principles
  2. Creating, editing, and using templates to produce publications
  3. Creating, importing, and manipulating graphics
  4. Creating and manipulating text
  5. Formatting paragraphs, tables, and lists
  6. Enhancing documents through special effects
  7. Using color effectively
  8. Importing and manipulating text and graphics from other sources
  9. Linking Publisher publications with other software applications
  10. Formatting documents using master pages


May also include:
 

  1. Effective design and layout rules used in publication industry
  2. Create Web pages from a Publisher publication
  3. Create, edit, and print long publications including supporting pages

  1. Learn basics of desktop publishing software.
  2. Use and edit templates to create publications.
  3. Import graphics.
  4. Move, size, and crop graphics appropriately.
  5. Create and import text.
  6. Apply attributes of size and style to text to enhance documents.
  7. Use automatic features of software efficiently.
  8. Use color appropriately and effectively.
  9. Demonstrate proper file management techniques.
  10. Demonstrate safe handling and use of hardware and software.
  11. Link Publisher publications with other software applications.
  12. Insert and format hyperlinks 
  13. Use merge features to produce business documents

  2. Create supporting pages for multi-page publications, such as index or table of contents.
