Course Description

Purpose: Update the healthcare professional on current guidelines/procedures for restraint use. Restraint is the direct application of physical force to restrict a patient’s freedom of movement (JCAHO, 2004).Physical force can be human, mechanical devices, or a combination. Restraints should be used only when essential to prevent the patient from harming himself, staff, or other patients. While restraints are an important aspect of the course, the program is also designed to develop basic de-escalation and defensive skills for providers.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Participants will have updated working knowledge of current guidelines and procedures for restraint use, basic de-escalation techniques and defensive skills.
