Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Explain how one's cultural identity impacts others, and why cultural consciousness is important in a diverse society.
- Analyze how stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and oppression affect human development and one’s personal, career, and academic goals.
- Articulate the various socio-cultural contexts which influence the development of cultural identity and self-concept.
Social Inquiry and Analysis
Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.
General education philosophy statement
Cultural identity is a key contributor to people’s wellbeing. It is important for students to explore the breadth and variety of cultural identity and diversity. This can help break down barriers and build a sense of trust between people as well as help students identify what can contribute to barriers between groups. In this class students will define individual identity within the context of human diversity, evaluate their ability to adapt when relating and working in diverse contexts, and identify strategies for developing cultural intelligence.

Practice personal cultural self-awareness in a diverse society.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
1. Respond orally and/or in writing to course related assignments.
2. Participate in and report on an experiential or service learning activity.

4. Write journals reflecting personal experiences and reactions to course related topics.

- Disability/ability
- Multiracial/biracial identity
- Age
- Religion
- Functioning in a diverse society
- Cross-cultural conflict
