Course Description
Introduces Microsoft operating systems administration including installation, configuration, and management. Covers command line interface and GUI tools to organize, manage and maintain the file system. Introduces users, groups, printing, profiles, policies and the registry. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of this course students should be able to:
- Install and configure a current Microsoft client operating system.
- Effectively use command line commands and GUI tools to run programs, and manage files and folders.
- Create user and group objects.
- Use user and group objects to implement logon, print and file system security.
- Apply basic concepts of cyber security in Microsoft operating systems.
Course Activities and Design
This course is presented by means of lecture/discussion sessions, assignments, exams, and lab projects.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Through exams, projects and class assignments students will be assessed to determine if they are able to:
- Define the basic components of an operating system.
- Partition and format a disk.
- Install a Windows operating system.
- Implement and effective file system for both program and data files.
- Configure the look and feel of the desktop and operating environment.
- Work effectively in command line and GUI mode to scan directories, copy or move files, rename files, or see and change attributes.
- Create users and groups.
- Place users in groups.
- Assign file system permissions to users and groups.
- Implement printing.
- Copy profiles.
- Implement custom default profiles.
- Identify and edit local policy.
- Edit the registry.

- Partition a disk and format the partitions.
- Install a current client Microsoft operating system.
- Configure the desktop and operating environment.
- Describe steps that occur during the boot process.
- Customize and manage the taskbar, notification area, and quick launch toolbar.
- Effectively use the following GUI tools:
- Control Panel
- Explorer
- Internet Explorer
- Disk Defragmenter
- Disk Cleanup
- Disk Error Check
- Backup
- Administrative Tools
- Effectively use the following command line commands:
- fdisk
- dir
- md
- cd
- rd
- copy
- xcopy
- move
- attrib
- type
- Set NTFS permissions on folders and files.
- Create users and groups.
- Place users into groups.
- Change users’ passwords
- Effectively implement printing.
- Identify files and folders used to implement profiles.
- Delete and copy profiles.
- Establish a custom, default profile.
- Identify registry keys, sub-keys, and entries.
