Course Description

Covers clinical training and practical experience in expanded functions dental assisting duties as allowed by the Oregon Dental Practice Act. Focuses on the rationale and procedures for coronal polishing, amalgam and composite finishing/polishing, fluoride application, retraction cord placement, and pit and fissure sealant placement.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Perform coronal polishing using correct and safe technique and positioning.
  2. Demonstrate amalgam and composite finishing and polishing using correct and safe techniques.
  3. Apply fluoride using correct and safe techniques.
  4. Demonstrate placement of retraction cord using correct and safe techniques. 
  5. Demonstrate sealant preparation and placement using correct and safe techniques.

Communicate with the patient while providing coronal polishing and fluoride treatment on a co-student's teeth, utilizing patient management and inquiry and listening communication skills. Communicate with co-student and/or patient about procedure and post operative instructions while providing sealant placement.

Students work with/on each other to practice and complete coronal polishing and fluoride treatment procedures accounting for differences in individual patients.
