Course Description

Covers intermediate concepts of dental materials, including various dental specialties, soft denture relines, suture removal, endodontic materials, and periodontal dressings. Includes materials, process, and construction of fixed and removable prosthesis.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify the properties, applications, indications, and contraindications of dental materials used in prosthodontics and various dental specialties.

  2. Recognize the uses and contraindications of dental materials used in Expanded Function Dental Assisting (EFDA) duties.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Recognize and describe characteristics and uses of dental materials in a series of assigned projects

  2. Complete a comprehensive final exam

  • Explain the characteristics, properties and uses of the many types of metallic restorations fabricated in the lab and cemented in the oral cavity
  • Discuss investment materials and describe the processes used during casting procedures
  • Describe burnout and casting procedures for inlay and crown construction
  • Describe the types of ceramics used in dentistry
  • Describe the fabrication of temporary crowns
  • Describe the steps in placement of a denture soft liner
  • Recognize the new technologies used in dentistry today
  • Describe the steps in fabrication of a full denture

Upon completion students will be able to:

  2. Describe the uses and contraindications of dental materials used in Expanded Function Dental Assisting (EFDA) duties.

Activities: Students work in groups to research new technology and present information in both oral and written form.

Research dental materials used at OHSU - students create a written narrative and an oral presentation of their findings.
