Course Description

Covers intermediate laboratory skill development in dental assisting materials and laboratory equipment. Includes the processes and materials used during the construction of fixed and removable prosthesis. Introduces dental materials used in various dental specialties. Includes an introduction to soft denture relines, suture removal, endodontic materials, and periodontal dressings.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the proper use, manipulation, application, and clean-up procedures for dental materials used in prosthodontics and various dental specialties in anticipation of transferring skills while assisting chairside.

  2. Perform dental materials laboratory duties while demonstrating professionalism, safety, and asepsis techniques at an intermediate level.

Skills:

  • Demonstrate adherence to laboratory standards and safety protocols
  • Explain the selection and purpose of, and demonstrate the manipulation of a selected group of restorative materials, cements, bases, liners and varnishes
  • Demonstrate the fabrication and trimming of study casts
  • Describe and demonstrate the fabrication and cementation of temporary crowns on a typodont
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in suture removal
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in preparation, placement and removal of a periodontal dressing
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in preparation and placement of denture soft reline material
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in fabricating a custom tray for whitening procedures
  • Demonstrate the steps involved in fabricating an acrylic light-cured custom tray for indirect restorative procedures
  • Demonstrate the steps and placement of an intermediate restoration on a typodont

  • Self Evaluation of lab projects and presentation to instructor of results of results of evaluations.

  • Perform, at an intermediate-level, dental material laboratory duties while demonstrating professionalism, safety, and asepsis techniques.

Describe Interactions with patients, dental students and other dental professionals during weekly rotations at OHSU School of Dentistry.

Students work in teams on lab assignments to include peer evaluation on completed lab projects.
