Course Description
Covers a specialized study of the structures of the head and neck with an emphasis on the oral cavity, anesthesia, and a review of diseases that manifest in the oral cavity.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Use knowledge of basic head and neck anatomy and developmental processes to assist in the assessment of patients' health information prior to dental treatment.
- Describe the use of anesthesia and the structures affected by anesthesia during its use in dental procedures.
- Use knowledge of the nervous system, with particular emphasis on cranial nerves, during dental procedures.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Describe the basic structure and function of the nervous system as it relates to the administration of dental anesthetic in the dental office.
- Locate and identify the major bones of the head and face.
- Describe the relationship of bone structure and composition to dental conditions such as malocclusion.
- Describe the muscles of facial expression and mastication and explain the actions of each.
- Identify the temporomandibular joint and describe its function and dysfunction.
- List the major salivary glands and describe the consequences of dysfunction.
- Describe the histological and anatomical features of the tongue and explain the process of deglutition.
- Trace the blood flow from the heart to the oro-facial structures identifying major blood vessels.
- Describe, at an introductory level, the embryonic development of the human fetus with emphasis on the oro-facial structures.
- Describe a variety of common developmental disorders affecting the oro-facial structures.
- Review of diseases that manifest in the mouth.
