Course Description
Covers oral and written communication, computer skills, and job search techniques related to dentistry.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.
- Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting.
- Prepare cover letter, resume, thank-you letters and participate in mock interviews in preparation for employment upon graduation.

Competencies and Skills
- Discuss situations which arise in the dental office environment which require strong verbal communications skills.
- Define a variety of terms used to describe personal computers and their function.
- Complete laboratory exercises and projects in inventory control and recall system management as assigned using a personal computer and assigned software.
- Research the local job market for dental assistants and explain the steps to follow in an effective job search.
- Compose a personal resume to be used in the job search.
- Discuss the factors involved in a job interview and compare effective and ineffective interviews.
- Discuss the importance of follow-up procedures to the job interview.
- Demonstrate effective writing skills by composing a professional resume.
- Practice interviewing for an individual and committee interview.

- Direct instruction in and an associated assignment in designing a dental office to include floor plan measurement and layout as well as researching equipment purchasing costs and installation.
