Course Description

Covers clinical training and practical experience in Expanded Function Dental Assisting (EFDA) and Expanded Function Orthodontic Dental Assistant (EFODA) duties as allowed by the Oregon Dental Practice Act. Focuses on expanded function procedures such as coronal polishing, amalgam and composite finishing/polishing, fluoride application, retraction cord placement, pit and fissure sealant placement, and orthodontic specialty procedures.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Perform coronal polishing using correct and safe technique and positioning.

  2. Demonstrate amalgam and composite finishing and polishing using correct and safe techniques.

  3. Apply fluoride using correct and safe techniques.

  4. Demonstrate placement of retraction cord using correct and safe techniques. 

  5. Demonstrate sealant preparation and placement using correct and safe techniques. 

  6. Perform separator placement.

  7. Demonstrate fitting, seating, and cementing molar bands.

  8. Remove molar bands with Ultrasonic scaler and hand scaler.

  9. Demonstrate maxillary and mandibular archwire placement.

  10. Place both elastomeric and steel ligature ties.

  11. Perform intraoral photos.

  12. Demonstrate malocclusion elastics.

  13. Demonstrate the process of bonding brackets and the removal of brackets.

Communicate with co-student and/or patients about procedure and post operative instructions while providing sealant placement. 

  • Perform, at a basic level, expanded functions of orthodontic duties while utilizing correct and safe methods.
