Course Description

Study of medical emergencies that occur in the dental office including prevention, recognition and appropriate intervention.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Be prepared to prevent potential medical emergencies, or recognize and assist in the treatment of the dental patient when one occurs.

Course Activities and Design

  • Describe an effective office emergency plan including delegation of responsibilities.
  • Identify the normal range of vital signs and describe the effects of abnormal changes of each.
  • Discuss the causes and treatment of syncope.
  • Explain signs, symptoms and interventions for airway obstruction.
  • Describe appropriate treatment for hyperventilation.
  • Describe signs and symptoms of asthma and appropriate interventions during an asthma attack.
  • Discuss recognition of severe allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock and identify appropriate medical interventions.
  • Describe typical signs and symptoms of epilepsy and discuss prevention and intervention in the case of a seizure.
  • Differentiate between diabetic coma and insulin shock.
  • Identify the signs of a local anesthetic related emergency and discuss prevention and interventions.
  • Differentiate between symptoms of and interventions used with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and congestive heart failure.
  • Describe the procedure for performing CPR.
  • Identify warning signs and symptoms of CVA.
  • Discuss a variety of occupation hazards of health care workers and identify effective prevention strategies.
  • Discuss the legal aspects and ramifications related to the provision of emergency care in the dental office.
