Course Description

Introduces microscopic anatomy and embryology of the oral tissues.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:
1. Recognize the relationship between the embryology of the face, oral cavity and oral/dental tissues in order to apply information in clinical practice.
2. Differentiate between tissues and structures of the oral cavity and facial area for application in the clinical setting when assessing, planning and treating oral pathology.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

1. Describe the various stages in the development of a human embryo with emphasis on the head and neck.

2. Identify critical times and elements in the development of structures of the oral cavity, discussing a variety of common development abnormalities.

3. Identify the histological appearance of various epithelial and endothelial cells and locate them in the oral cavity.

4. Compare and contrast the histological characteristics of bone, enamel, dentin and cementum.

5. Identify the histological characteristics of dental pulp tissue and discuss normal variations.

6. Differentiate between skin and mucous membranes from a histological perspective and discuss the characteristics of a variety of mucus membrane structures in the head and neck area.

7. Discuss the histological characteristics of periodontal tissues.

8. Classify salivary glands and describe characteristics of salivary gland tissues.
