Course Description

Covers development, implementation and evaluation of dental health projects in the community.

Addendum to Course Description

Students will participate in clinical rotations to community agencies to provide dental hygiene care with an emphasis on professional and personal reflection.  Student outreach projects designed in DH 208 and 252 will be completed.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

1.  Provide dental hygiene services and advocacy in a public health setting.

2.  Implement and evaluate a dental program to address a community health need.

3.  Apply intercultural communication strategies to enhance patient care with diverse populations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Oral presentation of results of student-run dental health project including implementation and evaluation phases.

  2. Complete a minimum number of service learning experiences within the community.

  3. Attendance at guest lecture sessions.

  • The six roles of the dental hygienist

  • The future of dental hygiene related to community needs.

SKILL COMPETENCIES:

  1. Implement the population-specific dental health education program developed the previous term

  2. Evaluate the success of the overall project using criteria assessment and evaluation techniques.

  3. Disseminate the results by writing a final report on the project which includes raw data, recommendations and summative evaluation.

  4. Complete assignments to community groups or facilities who request or show a need for oral health education services.

  5. Provide dental hygiene services to clients of a contracting community health facility on a rotation basis.
