Course Description

Introduces chemistry and physics, especially as they relate to dental materials. Measurement techniques and unit conversions are stressed. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course continues the study of the physical, chemical and biological aspects of dental materials begun in DT 151. Basic principles of chemistry and physics are included along with use of the metric system. Prerequisite - Students must have completed DT 151 and MTH 20 with a grade of D or better in each or have instructor and department chair approval.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1. Solve metric problems and move between metric and the US system of measurement.

2. Describe the materials in dental technology using as they pertain to chemistry and physics.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student progress will be determined through written examination, class participation.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

THEMES, CONCEPTS, ISSUES: Science of Dental Materials Requirement, History/Usage and Understanding the Metric System, Chemistry and Physics Basics and Dental Laboratory Applications

COMPETENCIES:

1. Know the necessities of further study of Science of Dental Materials.

2. Know the history of the Metric System and be able to use the system and convert subject related US Systems of Measurement to Metric and visa versa.

3. Identify atomic structure and its how specific dental materials are constructed

4. Know the basic laws of physics that apply to dental materials.

5. Describe why a knowledge of physics is needed in dental technology

6. Apply the above listed competencies to describe specific dental materials, their compatibility and the chemical/physical properties which are involved in their makeup/use.
