Course Description
Continues to examine dental materials as related to cast metal alloys and crown and bridge construction. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe the physical properties and uses of all products necessary for the fabrication of cast metal inlays, crowns and bridges.
- Explain in detail, all steps in the sequence of the fabrication of cast metal inlays, crowns and bridgework.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Define the purposes and uses of pattern and processing waxes and explain the direct and indirect waxing techniques.
- Identify, describe and compare the ingredients, physical properties and uses of a variety of processing waxes.
- Describe the uses of dental investment materials during crown and bridge fabrication procedures.
- Identify a variety of acids used in dentistry and describe how each is used.
- Discuss the effectiveness, cost and safety of a variety of acids.
- Discuss the nature, properties and uses of abrasives in the fabrication of crowns and bridges.
- Discuss the nature, properties and uses of wax solvents in crown and bridge procedures.
- Discuss the selection, properties and uses of a variety of gases used in the dental laboratory.
- Describe the uses of a variety of miscellaneous materials and procedures used in crown and bridge procedures including casting ring liners, copings, debubblizers, fluxes, facings and pontics.
- Describe the nature, properties and uses of metal alloys in the fabrication of crowns and fixed bridges.
- Discuss the importance of soldering in laboratory procedures and describe the process.
